On June 11th train company First Capital Connect trashed the cheap day return.

EVERY PASSENGER GOING FROM LONDON TO LUTON, FLITWICK OR BEDFORD BETWEEN 4:30 AND 7:00 P.M. NOW HAS TO PAY THE FULL PRICE FARE - NO TRAVELCARDS!

This affects families, pensioners, students, part-time workers, job-seekers; in fact anyone who uses discount tickets - about 4000 passengers a day.

• Morning commuter trains will be more crowded than ever, as people forced to pay full price return fare will have no reason to wait till 9.30am to travel in to London.
• Roads are busier than ever, as people drive to the edge of the London Travelcard area.
• Rail fares will be more complex than ever, further putting passengers off rail travel.
• Families are torn between children's excitement and the need to be back by 4:30p.m.

• Rail travel should be affordable and convenient. This scheme is neither.
• We need more capacity rather than price increases to lower demand.
• The train company must promise to lift any new restrictions once new trains are bought.

Other train companies have tried this, but backed off after local outcry.
